Digital Learning & Technology Resources for NCCSE Families

On this page, you will find useful resources to help you understand and navigate the technology and terms used for digital learning. The goal is to provide a SELPA-wide, user-friendly resource for the parents and families we serve within the 14 school districts that comprise the North Coastal Consortium for Special Education (NCCSE).

Terms

The “Cloud”- The concept of storing and accessing data and programs over the internet instead of your computer's hard drive.
Hyperlinks - a word, phrase, or image on a website or in a computer document which you click on to go to a different website, a different part of the document, etc.
Learning Management System (LMS)- A software/online application that is used to share, access, and track student assignments/lessons.

Google

Chrome Browser- A program that allows you to browse the internet and use G-Suite applications easily.
Chromebook - Similar to a laptop, but runs on an operating system that is based on cloud storage instead of software.
Google Add-ons- Tools that add more functionality to G-Suite apps (e.g Google Docs, Google Slides, etc.).
Google Apps- A computer program that runs in the Google Chrome browser. When opened, it takes you to another website.
Google Docs- A word-processing program (similar to Word) that works with G-Suite.
Google Drive - Consider it an online digital hard drive. It’s a cloud storage service that allows you to store and access files. You can view your files from any computer, smartphone, or tablet using your Google login credentials.
Google Extensions - Extends the Chrome browser capabilities across many websites while enhancing the user’s experience. They appear as tiny icons in the upper-right corner of the Chrome browser.
Google Sheets- A spreadsheet program (similar to Excel) that works with G-Suite.
Google Slides- A presentation program (similar to PowerPoint) that works with G-Suite.
Google Workplace (previously called G-Suite)- A collection of productivity and collaboration tools.

Apple

Apple Apps- A computer program designed to run on a mobile device such as an iPhone or iPad.
iOS - The operating system designed by Apple for its products (e.g. iPad).
Keynote- A word presentation program (similar to PowerPoint) that works on iOS devices (e.g. iPad).

Numbers- A spreadsheet program (similar to Excel) that works on iOS devices (e.g. iPad).

Pages-A word-processing program (similar to Word) that works on iOS devices (e.g. iPad).
Safari- A web browser developed by Apple. It is usually the default browser on Macbooks and iPads.

Video conferencing

A cloud-based platform that allows you to have a video conference with multiple people online.

Meets (Google)- works best with G-Suite/Workspace. It also has a chat feature.
Zoom - works on all devices/platforms. It also has a chat feature.
